Did a medical manufacturer knowingly put a deadly device on the market?
That seems to be the finding of a recent NBC investigative report on the IVC filter known as Recovery. According to the news report, the manufacturer C.R. Bard may have gone so far as to forge a document to cover up the fatal flaw in its device.
Inferior vena cava filters, known as IVC filters, are used in patients who are at risk for blood clots but who cannot take blood thinners. The filters are supposed to break up any clots before they reach the heart. Instead, in the case of the Recovery filter, clots may have pushed the filter into the heart or broken pieces of the filter off which then punctured the heart.
Either way, the result was fatal for some and required life-threatening hospitalizations for others.
The Recovery isn’t the only IVC filter causing problems in patients either.
In 2010, the FDA warned too many of these devices were being left in patients for too long, resulting in serious side effects.
For instance, nearly 50% of those with Cook Celect IVC filters experienced a perforation, according to a study published by the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology in 2013.
If you or a loved has had a complication related to your IVC filter, you are not alone. An IVC filter attorney can evaluate your situation and may help determine whether the drug manufacturer could be responsible for paying for expenses related to your injury.
