** Jury awards $2.5 million to former Risperdal user who suffers from gynecomastia.
Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson pays billions to settle criminal and civil liability related to its promotion of Risperdal. **
The antipsychotic drug Risperdal is at the center of a storm of charges leveled against its manufacturer Johnson & Johnson.
Dozens of states have claimed the company has promoted off-label and unsafe uses of the drug. The Department of Justice even took action, and the company paid $2.2 billion to settle federal criminal and civil liability charges. What’s more, at least 1,300 lawsuits have been filed against the maker of Risperdal.
Among the claims is the charge that Johnson & Johnson promoted the off-label use of Risperdal for ADHD and autism while downplaying its potential to cause gynecomastia, the growth of male breasts.
If you or your loved one has experienced gynecomastia, no one needs to tell you how challenging it can be to live with this very public and embarrassing side effect.
What if you found out the manufacturer knew about the risk and hid it from you?
That’s exactly the claim made in a lawsuit decided by a jury in February 2015. The Wall Street Journal reported a former FDA commissioner testified that Johnson & Johnson knew about the risks of gynecomastia but didn’t disclose its data. A jury agreed the company was liable and ordered it to pay $2.5 million in damages.
Johnson & Johnson has been settling other claims regarding Risperdal. It first settled a private lawsuit for an undisclosed amount in 2012 and has since paid $7.8 million to the State of Arkansas and $158 million to Texas.
If you or your child has experienced gynecomastia, a Risperdal lawyer can advise you on your legal options for compensation.
